Amity Dewey began her art career by watching her father create works around their home in Floyd, VA. His sculptures, paintings and sketches expressed themes of nature; people, faces and expressions; and the surreal. Amity’s earliest works consist of glorious trees and calming landscapes. As her technique became more refined, so did her subjects. She began painting portraits with deep expression, human forms became tree trunks and branches.
Amity recently received a bachelor’s degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Virginia Tech. When she’s not painting she works as a GIS technician for the city of Radford. She makes time to display and sell her art at street and music festivals. You can always find her at Steppin’ Out in Blacksburg and Floyd Fest. This year included Camp Barefoot, a music festival which included a significant art component. Amity helped to coordinate live painters and vendors, as well as painting herself. Live painting at shows has given Amity a new way to bring her art to the world. She’s been seen at shows all over Virginia and North Carolina combining art with great music. In March of this year, Amity befriended the Kings of Belmont from Charlottesville, VA. She not only did the artwork for their most recent CD release but also designed the layout.
Amity’s art is about to take to the road with upcoming shows in Charlotte, North Carolina and St. Petersburg, Florida. She continues to create new worlds of fascinating color and subjects.
